Marilyn Monroe a size zero? Say it ain’t so!

It’s common lore among curvy women that Marilyn Monroe, the sexiest “curvy” of them all, is a bountiful size 14. But few taking into account that a “vintage” size 14 is  far different than a modern size 14US (size 10 in the UK). Have you ever wondered what size the nearly five-foot-six, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” starlet would wear at … say … The Gap?

According to measurements provided by Monroe’s private dressmaker, the actresses weight fluctuated between 118 and 140 pounds throughout her career and her hips measured between 35-36 inches.  If she were to buy a pair of skinny jeans at The Gap she would be a US size 0, but I think that’s more of a testament to the company’s wonky vanity sizing. If she bought a pair of jeans from 7 for All Mankind, she may be closer to a US size 4-6. Weird, huh?

Does that mean that Marilyn Monroe shouldn’t be considered “curvy”? Absolutely not! Marilyn Monroe had a classic hourglass figure with a waist that measured more than eight inches smaller than her waist. Added to that, Marilyn was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful faces to ever grace the silver screen and possessed a figure that has been admired more than 50 years after her death.
